TRACK: Helen - "Violet"

TRACK: Helen – “Violet”

Liz Harris’ new group, Helen, has only released two tracks so far: the one below and “Motorcycle” back in July. With such a small sample size, I usually shy away from album anticipation as I’ve been burned before. I’m lookin’ at you Titus Andronicus and Swervedriver! Yet, I can’t help but feeling like the forthcoming The Original Faces is going to be a winner. There’s not a bad Grouper album out there and despite the fact I’m acknowledging Helen is a full band, I still think Harris’ touch is going to make this gold. If you haven’t heard “Motorcycle” yet, then stop what you’re doing and listen to that. Okay, so you’re getting there. Onto exhibit B: “Violet.” There’s no slow burn at the beginning on this one. The band just jumps right into that sea of noise. Like her work as Grouper, Harris’ gorgeous voice keeps the dark and unnerving from being too much. So, back to my original sentiment: I think The Original Faces is going to be one of 2015’s best. Maybe I’ll eat those words in a month. In the meantime, I’ll be listening to “Violet.” Join me below.

The Original Faces is out 9/4 via Kranky.
